18 Basic Things To Pack In Hospital Bag


It is always good to plan before time and same applies for baby-birth. It is suggested that you plan your bag early and pack it once you complete 34 weeks. Check what your hospital provides and pack accordingly. Also make sure that your hospital allows what you are going to carry with you. Here are some basic things that you will need in your maternity hospital bags:



Gown- Bring at least two gowns that have zip or buttons at the bosom. These gowns are feeding friendly and comfortable for you as well. Choose gowns made of cotton.

  • Nappies/diapers– Your baby will need a lot of them.
  • Underwear– Carry at least 4 comfortable panties with you. You may get panties in hospital but obviously you know what you like.
  • Sanitary Napkins– Even though most hospitals provide them, sanitary pads meant for heavy flow are a must in your maternity bag.
  • Intimate Wash– Another must and should not be missed.
  • Unisex baby clothes– Most likely you will be in for a surprise regarding the sex of your baby so pack baby clothes that suit both genders.
  • Blanket/Bedsheet– You may carry them in case there is a need.
  • Towels– Pack many towels for yourself and baby. Buy them in all sizes.
  • Wet tissues and Tissue rolls– For cleaning up your baby and yourself as well.
  • Warm Clothes– Needed mainly in winters. Pack warm clothes for both baby and you.
  • Slippers– Pack a pair of comfortable slippers. You can also carry a few pair of socks for more comfort.
  • Baby Nursing Cover– It is for ease in feeding your baby.
  • Feeding Bottle– In case you are unable to breastfeed the baby, bottle will come handy.
  • Baby oil, Bodywash and Cream– Essentials for your newborn.
  • Nursing Bra and Pads– Nursing bras are needed so are nursing pads to prevent any leakage.
  • Toiletries etc.- Lip balm  hairbrush, hair-ties, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, face wash, shampoo, conditioner, lotion.
  • Snacks– Carry some of your favourite snacks and also something like nuts that provides energy. You can pack energy drinks too.
  • Music and Books– These will be a great help in passing the time and will also help in reducing anxiety.
  • Camera– Carry a camera with you to capture the precious earliest pictures of you and baby.
