5 Ways To Give Rice To Your Toddler

You can start feeding rice to your baby when he reaches 4-6 months of age. Food for the initial 6 months of a baby is fulfilled through breast milk after which he can start with solid food, one ‘at a time’. Provided below are certain rice-based recipes for your toddler’s effective growth and development.

The Chicken, sweet corn and Rice Soup:

To prepare this dish you will need:

  • 1 full carrot (large) which is diced
  • 1 piece of chicken breast which is cut into smaller pieces
  • 1 finely chopped garlic clove
  • ½ cup of ‘long grain’ rice
  • ½ cup of sweet corn
  • 4 fresh thyme sprigs
  • 5 cups of chicken stock (homemade)
  • 1 tablespoon of tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

Heat the oil in any saucepan (large) and sauté the garlic and onion in it. Now, pour in the chicken pieces and stir for 1 or 2 minutes. Next, pour in the rice and stir until the grains get coated with the oil. Throw in the diced (small cubes) carrots next along with the thyme, chicken stock and sweet corn and let the mixture cook for approximately 10 minutes without covering on ‘medium heat’. Finally, add the tomato paste, stir well and let it cook for another 10 minutes. Serve hot.

The Apple and Cinnamon Pudding:

It is fit for toddlers above 7 months of age. To prepare this recipe you will need:

  • 1 stick of Cinnamon
  • 1 cup of ‘long grain’ rice
  • 1 whole apple (sweet to taste)
  • 500ml of milk
  • 3 cups of water

Pour the water in a saucepan (medium-sized) and let it come ‘to a boil’. Now add the cinnamon and rice and cover it to cook properly in approximately 8 minutes. Next, add the milk and cover it up again. Let it cook for approximately 40 minutes on ‘low heat’. After this, stir the apple (diced pieces) and let it cook for another 5 minutes. And the food is ready to be served with either pureed blueberries or applesauce (homemade).

The Brown Rice Cereal:

For this preparation you will need:

  • ¼ cup of brown rice powder (which is ground using blender)
  • 1 cup of water

Allow the water to reach boiling point inside the saucepan and slowly add the prepared rice powder. Continuously stir while adding this powder. Let the mixture simmer for around 10 minutes and keep whisking it all this time. Add breast or formula milk along with fresh fruits and serve it warm.

The Leek and Mushroom Risotto:

This recipe is suitable for children between 10 and 11 months of age. For preparation you will need:

  • 30g of diced button mushrooms
  • 1 cup of ‘Arborio’ rice
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 80g of finely chopped leeks
  • 30g of ‘cheddar’ cheese
  • 5 cups of chicken stock (homemade)
  • Butter (1 knob)
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • ½ cup of cooked carrots that have been mashed roughly (using a fork’s back portion)

Allow the chicken stock to heat and then let it simmer. In a separate saucepan heat the oil and sauté the onions till it emits fragrance. Next, add the leeks, garlic and the mushrooms and stir for approximately 1 minute. Now add the rice and mix until it coats with the oil. Pour in a cup of the chicken stock and stir the mixture constantly for the next 2 minutes till such time the liquid gets absorbed. Repeat this process until all the stock gets absorbed by the mixture. Now add the butter, cooked carrots and the cheese and mix it up all well till the entire cheese gets melted. Remove this mixture from the heat and serve hot.
