Co-sleeping – Is it a wise decision?

In a country like India, parents cannot imagine their infant child in another bed other than theirs.A It’s unimaginable.A It is considered taboo to separate the child and the extended family can raise an unwanted hue and cry over the entire issue.

Some of the reasons why Indian parents keep their child in their beds is as follows:

  • It is part of the Indian way of doing things.
  • Parents feelAbelieve it helps their baby feel safe and secure when the child is near them and that the child likes the close bodily contact.
  • Mothers have this satisfied feeling and believe itas good for their relationship with their baby.
  • The next reason would be because they find it more practical to breast feed the child during the night.
  • Thins are easier for a nursing mother to get her sleep cycle in sync with her baby’s
  • For many, the expense of a crib and lack of space in small flats, forces parents to keep the child in their bed.

The decision to do soAis ultimately that of the parents and if co-sleeping is what they opt for then the most important thing is that bed-sharing is done safely and with adequate wisdom.

  • Do not smoke in the bedroom.
  • Do not take drugs, alcohol orAany type of sedative medication that causes heavy sleep
  • Itas never advisable to share a bed with your baby if you smoke or take drugs.
  • Do not keep your baby at the edge of the bed.A Make sure there is enough padding around the child that will prevent him/her from falling off the bed
  • You infant could roll and get trapped or wedged between a mattress and headboard, wall, or any other bedroomAfurniture.
  • You could suffocate or strangle the child by mistake in your sleep.
  • Do not fight in while in the bedroom.A It is traumatising for the baby to hear those hateful voices.
  • Older children also sleeping in the same bed could roll over the infant causing serious damage
  • Keep your pets of the bed at least during the child’s infancy.
  • Strangulation in a bed frameAlike one with holes or one that has rods and gaps is likely cause it will allow the infantsAbody part to pass through but thenAtrapping the child during removal

In addition to theA safety risks ofA sharing a bed with a baby,Aparents also get disturbed and cannot have aAgood night’s rest.A The working parents will really suffer due to this arrangement.AAAnother problems one can foresee is a child getting used to the parent being in the bed with him/her causing the child to wait till the parent returnsAdisrupting the schedule for everyone.

In the end whether you decide to get a crib or keep your child in your bed it isAa personal decision.AA DoAweigh the pros and cons andAtalk to your child’s doctor about the risks, possible personal benefits and your family’s preferred arrangements.
