Symptoms can occur immediately after eating, inhaling or coming in contact with a particular food item or can take some time to show up.
Most common symptoms of food allergy in kids are itchy skin, hives, swollen lips or eyelids, coughing, diarrhea, vomiting, difficulty in breathing and reddening of skin.
Diagnosis and Treatments
Food allergies are diagnosed by blood and skin tests but the results may be misleading. When your baby or toddler shows any allergic reaction, try to recall what the ate during last few days. Getting tested for allergies to particular foods gives more accurate results and is convenient as well. Tests should be done over a period of time to ascertain the cause of allergy.
There is no specific treatment for getting rid of allergic reactions to foods though the symptoms can be treated. One good thing is that many children become tolerant to the food items once they were allergic to as they grow up. Tolerance doesn’t happen in all the cases though and precaution is always advised.
