Thyroid imbalances are slowly becoming more common these days. I realized this recently when I was talkiing to some colleagues and after I mentioned I had Hypothyroidism, they too admitted to having either Hyper or Hypothyroidism…I was puzzled as to why people still consider it as a hush-hush topic?? I remember right before my wedding, I was also told not to divulge this to my husbands extended family…this was told to me by my MIL and I was really weirded out by this. I mean..It ain’t like I have a communicable disease right?? Why hide and talk about it behind closed doors??

But nevertheless, this does happen and more often than not, this results in a truckload of unanswered questions and doubts. Through this Thyroid Series, we hope to help you a tiny bit atleast. Pls don’t hesitate to talk about it and discuss…atleast in this forum where we all women can help each other so much with our experiences.
Today, We’ll be talking about the food items to stick to or to avoid if you have a Thyroid imbalance. So lets get started..
Food items to stick to if you have Hypothyroidism (Low Thyroid function)
- Eat enough iodine daily.
- Eat foods rich in anti oxidents & vitamin C (Eg. tomatoes, bell peppers, squash, cherries and blueberries
- Skimmed dairy products
- Saltwater fish
- Eat foods that are rich in vitamin b & iron like whole grains, fresh vegetables, and sea vegetables.
- Avoid soy products
- Consult your doc before taking any vitamins/minerals supplement (especially iron) because they may interfere absorption of medication

Food Tips to avoid for Hypothyroidism:-
- Avoid eating following foods raw: cabbage, broccoli, turnips, rutabaga, mustard greens, kale, spinach, Brussels sprouts, peaches, pears, strawberries, radishes, cauliflower, millet, and African cassava. (You can eat them cooked, but have them in small quantities)
- Soya Milk
- Whole milk or heavy cream
- Always remove Chicken skin before cooking it and keep red meat consumption to a minimum
- Avoid eating too much butter.

A lot of food items like cauliflower, soyabean, radishes, broccoli, etc contain a natural subtance called Goitrogens which interfere with the production of thyroid hormones. Some believe that cooking such food items may inactivate goitrogens, but it isn’t a sure fact. So beware….especially pregnant ladies may find it a better idea to avoid these food items totally just to be on the safer side.
Food items to stick to if you have Hyperthyroidism (overactive Thyroid function)/foods to eat in hypothyroidism
- Cook with Olive oil
- Use honey as a sweetner
- Eat lots of veggies and grains
- Stick to whole wheat pasta and brown bread
- Gorge on berries. They have a lot of anti-oxidents which build your immunity.
- Have fish, eggs , mushrooms for your dose of Omega 3.
- Include a dairy product in your diet necessarily. This is because hyperthyroidism if escalated can lead to osteoporosis.
- Much on beans and nuts for your daily dose of protein.

Foods To Avoid In Hypothyroidism:-
These are the major food items to stick to and avoid if you have a Thyroid imbalance. I’ll admit that I cheat quite a few times now after my thyroid levels are steady…I have a deep love for strawberries and Soya products. I remember when I was first diagnosed with HypoT, the Doc had advised me to stay away from full cream milk but didn’t mention Soy products. Since I thought Soy was healthy, I really gorged on Soy milk and soya beans. And even though I was exercising then, I didn’t drop the kilos. So I read online and then came to know of my horrible Faux Pas….I learnt most thing through the internet actually since I couldn’t talk to anyone about it with the topic being so hush-hush..
So you my point about being able to talk about things? If everyone would be more forthcoming about this topic and not treat it like leprosy, we’d know so much more and wouldn’t make half the mistakes we usually do..
Don’t forget to exercise daily and take your meds without fail. Plus, a regular blood test (T3,T4,TSH) should be a mandatory part of your routine every 6mts…
