Toddlers need maximum nutritional attention in the crucial years of 1-3 years as this period has a remarkable importance because a whole lot of mental and physical development takes place during this time.

Mothers are also concerned about what are the appropriate food items that should be ideally included in a toddler’s everyday diet so as to aid in proper overall growth and mental development.

For this purpose, various studies carried throughout years on the eating and development habits of toddlers innovated the very popular diet chart for toddlers.

We have already discussed about the scientific approach of Food Pyramid for kids and now we will have a look at an ideal food chart for toddlers who are picky eaters and at the same time need a balanced nutrition to help in in their overall physiological development.

Since toddlers are considered more active than babies, they need a proper intake of nutrition from various food sources and her we will list out the essentials that must be included in a toddler’s diet.

Food Groups-

These are several food items which are grouped as under.


Toddlers between 12-36 months require about 2 servings of milk daily. Include 1 cup milk or yoghurt in their diet. Processed cheese and cottage cheese can be included to give a variety of taste to toddlers.


1-2 fruits daily is ideal to be included in a toddler’s diet everyday. Sliced Apple, cubed fruits or a banana is great to start giving to toddlers.


1-2 cups of vegetables sauteed or boiled & mashed is perfect to include in a toddler’s daily eatables and this will ensure that the nutritional requirements of the child is met efficiently.

Cereals & Grains-

3-5 daily servings of cereals & grains which can be given interchangeably. A slice of whole-grain bread, 1/2 cup cooked pasta, 1/2 cup rice or cereal or 1 cup ready-to-eat cereal.

Protein intake-

2-4 portions of protein rich food items are a must for a toddler’s sustainable diet everyday. 1 boiled egg, chicken or meat, fish or other seafood. 1-2 tbsp nut butter, 1/4 cup sprouts or legumes, lentils etc.

The water intake should not be neglected and if they refuse to drink plain water, you may also give them glucose or prepare lime water to make it appealing for their taste.

Well, this accounts for a very general food chart for toddlers. The amount may vary depending upon the taste and interest of toddlers in many food items. Usually toddlers should be given those food items which is rich in fiber as a lot of toddlers have various bowel related issues in this age.
