How To Protect Baby’s Skin From Harsh Sun
Sun is an essential part of our lives and is vital for our well-being. But spending too much time under sun or sun-exposure without proper protection is detrimental for health. Sun exposure is especially harmful for babies as their skin is extra thin, sensitive and delicate. A little carelessness can result in skin cancer at a later stage.
Babies have less melanin and so their skin is more prone to damage. Let us take a look at some simple tips that will minimize the risk for your baby-
Keep your babies protected from sun at all times. Use umbrella or stroller shades whenever outside. When in home, try to keep your baby away from direct sun. You can use anti-UV films on windows to minimize the harshness of sun.
It is best to keep your little one away from sun till they turn 6 months old.
When out in the sun, cover your baby with light clothes. Light so that they don’t feel uncomfortable. Make sure that most of their body is covered to avoid sunburn. You can use a wide-brimmed hat and also anti-UV sunglasses if your baby doesn’t feel uncomfortable wearing these.
Anti-UV clothing is also available at some places. If you can get them, nothing like that.
Sunscreen is your best friends under sun so make it your baby’s friend too. Sunscreens can be used on babies aged above 6 months. Always use a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects from both UVA and UVB rays. Also use sunscreens with SPF value of 15 or above but don’t go too high.
Many companies make sunscreens specifically for babies, use them as they are safe for delicate skin and don’t sting the eyes. Apply sunscreen on all exposed areas of your kid’s body at least 30 minutes before taking them out in the sun. Reapply at regular intervals. Always use sunscreen during day outing whether the sun is harsh or there are clouds outside.
Make sure that you do a patch test on a small area of baby’s skin before using it for the whole body.
Babies love to go for a walk but you need to be careful regarding the timings under the harsh sun. It is best to avoid taking your baby out between 10 AM to 4 PM. During these hours, the sun is at its harshest and the chances of potential damage to the sensitive baby skin are very high.
