Moong-Dal Chilla Recipe for Babies (12 months+)

I started giving my daughter cheelaa once she turned 1yr old. I know many moms start way earlier but i was kinda neurotic about her not having teeth (she cut her 1st tooth late) and choking hazards.. i started off with Besan (gram flour) chillas and then Moong dal chilla and both are a huge hit. So thought to share the recipe of this super simple breakfast or snack for your toddler.

Ingredients:

  • 1 small bowl of yellow moong dal (without the skin)
  • 1tsp besan
  • 1/2tsp Jeera powder
  • 1/2tsp Coriander powder
  • 2tbsp chopped coriander leaves
  • 1 small onion chopped finely
  • A pinch of turmeric (haldi)
  • Salt to taste
  • Ghee/ Butter to cook

 

 

Prep time: 10mins
Cooking time: 10mins

Method:

1. Soak the moong dal for 1-2hrs
2. Blend the soaked dal in the mixee along with the powders until the paste becomes really smooth. You can add water to adjust the consistency but don’t add too much. The batter needs to be of the same consistency as Dosa batter.
3. Add the onion and chopped coriander leaves along with salt to this batter.
4. Grease and heat a non-stick pan on a medium flame. You can use butter or ghee to grease the utensil. You may opt to use regular oil too if you have introduced this to your kid already.
5. Once heated, pour the mixture onto the pan and spread with a spoon. If you havent added onions then the batter would spread like a dosa itself.
6. Dribble some butter/ghee/oil on the surface and flip the pancake in about 1min
7. Keep it on the flame till done and flip it over onto your plate
8. Voila! Your moong dal chilla is ready to be served. It can be served with ketchup or any chutney of your choice. My daughter likes to eat it plain.

Some additional points to remember
1. You can use a stencil to make shapes to make these more interesting for your kid. I either use stencils or make tiny round ones like my mom used to make for me. It makes is fun and more exciting for kids.
2. You can add some urad dal for a diff taste too.
3. If your kid prefers sweeter tastes then u can puree half a tomato ans add it to the batter.
