Ways To Prevent Diaper Rashes In Babies
The prime focus of every mother is that her child always stays happy, cheerful and comfortable. Bed wetting is one common issue with children. This is why most mothers ensure that their babies wear diapers so that they stay dry for long. There are natural ways of preventing bed wetting in older children but if the child is too small you have to use diapers. They help in keeping the baby dry when he/she is asleep.
However, the biggest problem with using diapers is that they sometimes lead to ‘diaper rash’. No mom is happy to see her little bundle of joy suffering from diaper rashes. The common reasons for diaper rash are:
- Sensitive skin
- Diapers that don’t fit properly
- Contact with faeces and urine for too long
Below mentioned are the ways of ensuring that your little one is always comfortable:
1) Wash diapers carefully
If you happen to use a cloth diaper, make sure that you are careful in washing them. No soap should remain in the cloth or else the baby may get diaper rash.
2) Clean the baby well
While bathing the baby, make sure that you clean the area covered by the diaper with a mild soap. Don’t rub that area hard while wiping the baby as the skin is quite sensitive.
3) Change the baby’s soiled diaper
This is extremely important! Even if you are extremely busy, you must be aware when your baby has soiled the diaper. He/she may cry aloud to let you know but you should also be alert. Immediately change the diaper when it has been soiled. Also, don’t be bent on keeping your baby in a diaper all day long. It will be good if you remove his/her diaper for at least a few hours a day. It is agreed that working moms may find this difficult but for the baby’s sake you should let his/her skin breathe. How ever much diaper companies claim, it is always good to reduce the use of commercial diapers as much as you can.
4) Use soft materials
Make sure that you wash cotton diapers with fabric softeners. Also, don’t forget to keep diapers loose. If you use commercial baby wipes, please stop using them as they have strong chemicals that can cause harm to the delicate skin of the baby.
5) Keep a check on the rashes
If your baby happens to get rashes, please check with the paediatrician as soon as possible. External application of a protective barrier on the skin such as a zinc oxide paste can help prevent dermatitis. The baby can also have fungal infections and you need to use anti-fungal creams on the advice of the doctor.
